RESIDENTIAL OPTIONS

Everyone's route to independent living is unique.  The Center For Independence fosters the development of skills that allow a person to live as independently as possible.  The agency provides a variety of living options which allow individuals the opportunity to live and participate as citizens of the community.  Residential choices the agency supports include:

Living At Home  People may decide living at home with their family is the right decision for them.  The agency supports nearly 95 persons in their own home.

Supported Living  The agency owns and operates nine homes.  Approximately 75 of the 190 persons we serve reside in these settings.  Depending on a person's needs, our agency can provide assistance ranging from support during awake hours to 24 hour supports.

Independent Living  People who need limited assistance may live in a home of their choice in their hometown community.

 

WORK OPTIONS

The Center For Independence adheres to the philosophy that all persons, regardless of disability, are capable of performing a valuable and employable service to the community.  Our agency helps people develop the work behaviors and skills necessary to gain and maintain employment.  The desired outcome of teaching is community job placement.  Work options the agency supports include:

Agency Provided Work Opportunities  People have paid work opportunities and receive instruction with other adults with developmental disabilities in an environment owned and operated by the Center For Independence.  Teaching is provided using paid contracts from various businesses in the area.

Supported Community Worksites  The agency also provides instruction at work sites in the community.  Our staff provides instruction to small groups helping them maintain employment through teaching and individual support.

Community Employment  The Huron Area Center For Independence assists people in obtaining employment of their choice.  Instructors work with individuals to ensure job success by maintaining ongoing supports in the employment setting.

 

CASE MANAGEMENT

The Center For Independence provides each person we serve with a Case Manager.  The Case Manager serves as a liaison in coordinating the development of community options and personal goals and assures that all desired services are provided.

SPECIALIZED SERVICES

Specialized services are coordinated with community providers to ensure quality care.  A wide range of services are provided based on individual assessment.  Specialized services the agency provides include:

Medical Services  Medical Services are coordinated with community health care providers to meet mental, physical and preventative health care needs.  In addition, nurses employed by the Center For Independence are dedicated to ensuring optimal health is maintained.

Behavioral Services  The Center For Independence employs a full-time staff person who teaches positive behavioral support strategies.  These strategies are designed to increase appropriate behaviors and choices, promote relationships and teach control though the development of mutual respect.  Our agency does not use aversive therapies such as time out, aversive conditioning or other techniques with similar degrees of restrictions or intrusions to control behaviors.

Communication Services  The Center For Independence contracts with a Speech Pathologist and employs a full-time staff person to assist with communication needs.  Augmentative or alternative communication systems are utilized to provide communication opportunities to people who are unable to communicate verbally.

Nutritional Services  The Center For Independence contracts with a Registered Dietician and employs a full-time staff person dedicated to ensuring the dietary and nutritional needs of the people we serve are met and implemented as prescribed.

Physical and Occupational Therapy  Our Support Services Technician works closely with Physical and Occupational Therapists to ensure therapies are implemented as prescribed.  This full-time staff person is dedicated to ensuring the adaptive devices and prosthetic equipment needed is maintained and utilized to make people's lives more independent.
